A beginner's badminton guide for kids
Thinking of starting your child in badminton? Here's the parent-friendly version: what they need to bring, what they'll actually learn in the first few weeks, and small things you can do at home to help.
What your child needs to start
- Comfortable sportswear and clean, non-marking indoor shoes. That's genuinely it to begin with.
- A water bottle. Badminton is fast, and kids work up a sweat.
- A racquet, but don't rush out and buy one. Good beginner programs lend a junior racquet for the first few sessions so you can see if your child takes to it.
- Shuttles are provided in class. You don't need to bring your own.
When you are ready to buy, a light, inexpensive junior racquet is perfect. There’s no need for anything fancy while they’re learning. Your coach can point you to the right size.
The basics they’ll learn first
- Grip: how to hold the racquet properly (the single biggest early fix)
- Ready position and basic footwork: getting to the shuttle in balance
- The serve: a simple, legal serve to start a rally
- Clears and a gentle overhead: sending the shuttle high and deep
- Rallying: keeping the shuttle going back and forth, which is where the fun kicks in
A good coach keeps it games-based, so kids build these skills without it feeling like a lesson. Progress in the first term is more about confidence and coordination than perfect technique.
How you can help at home
- Keep it light: praise effort and fun, not winning. Early enjoyment is what builds a long-term player.
- A bit of gentle rallying in the backyard or garage goes a long way (and it's great fun).
- Be consistent: turning up each week is the biggest driver of progress at this age.
- Let the coach coach. Your job on the sideline is encouragement, not technical notes.
What to expect over the first term
Expect a shy or wobbly start, then a noticeable jump once your child can rally. That’s usually the moment it “clicks” and they start asking to come back. Kids are grouped by age and ability, so your child is always learning alongside peers at a similar level, never thrown in the deep end.
